COACHING STAFF AND DEVELOPING SKILLS

Every conversation you have with your staff is a coaching or teachable moment. What we say and do affects people's reactions and behaviors. Therefore, coaching conversations are opportunities to teach, build trust, and motivate. This is your opportunity to provide valuable feedback that moves your staff to a higher level of performance, thought process, and self-awareness.

Remember that coaching conversations need to support personal discovery and job performance.

As you engage in with your staff remember to:

  1. Name the strengths and areas of growth

  2. Ask questions that bring insight to barriers that block success

  3. Elicit thoughts and ideas to promote self awareness

  4. Share your thoughts and suggestions (Be mindful of your delivery)

  5. Circle back with staff to learn how they are doing and to hold them accountable on shared agreements

Remember that growing people is not about what you think, but what you can get others to discover about themselves. As leaders we do not have all the answers and it is essential that we include our staff in the process of self discovery. There is far more value in asking a question that promotes thought creation and self-reflection, than simply sharing our own opinions.
