According to Buckingham and Clifton (2001), they define strength as something “you can fathom yourself doing repeatedly, happily and successfully”.

They talks about three revolutionary tools for discovering your strengths:

1. Identifying natural talents and distinguish them from things you can learn

2. Defining what you are really good at or dominant talent

3. Have language to describe talents and strengths

It is important to know your strengths so that you can begin to build on the things you can learn to improve your performance. As a leader it is important to know how to identify and define the strengths of your employees as well. Having a deep understanding of staff’s talents, knowledge, and skills, supports your ability to build strong working teams.“Talents are naturally recurring patterns; knowledge is the lessons learned, and skills are what you do to complete a task or activity” (Buckingham & Clifton, 2001, p. 29).

As you begin to think about your talents think about how they support you in your work and personal life. Remember it is doing what you are good at that gives you a feeling of accomplishment and success.

Next think about what you have learned throughout your personal and professional life that can support you in growing your talents. Last, what skills have you acquired that allow you to complete tasks and bring projects to completion? The key is to embrace that life is a journey of constant learning and self reflection!
